I'll admit it - I'm a water baby. Surfing, body-board, life-guard, swim team, snorkling...done it all.

Next step? SCUBA! It's my goal to become certified before 30th b-day...

Anyone here scuba before? Know of any deaf-friendly instructors in Northern CA?

I think DeafSCUBA98 and one more person would be able to help you, I forgot who ? and they are certified Deaf diving instructors. Welcome to AllDeaf and enjoy your stay here, Engima and God Bless .....

One of my former ASL teachers spends his summers diving for golf balls. Not sure when or how he got certified, but I can ask if you want to know.

Thanks ITPjohn - that would be great!

I was hoping to see if any deaf had scuba experience - how it was to scuba in a hearing class, terp issues, etc. I don't think I will be able to get a terp since scuba lessons are private - not public service, thus not under ADA.

Yes, There was someone else who is Deaf and still is a Scuba diver instructor. You can send a pm to the owner of the AllDeaf website. His name is Alex and ask him along with this thread put in the posting of your pm to Alex. I am sure he will be able to help you much more because I know there is one more Deaf person and he is still a current diving instructor and is Deaf himself too.

You can talk to DeafSCUBA98 about this because he's a deaf scuba... You can pm him to talking about it ;)

Hello Engima, I am a certified scuba diver but I do not know of any deaf friendly scuba instructors in your area though.

My story.....I met this nice hearing scuba instructor in a sign language class where I was a tutor and she was learning to sign so she could teach others to communicate in sign language underwater. She offered me free scuba classes in exchange for me to teach her sign language. I was so thrilled because I have always wanted to learn to scuba dive. The instructor and I then became friends. This was in the Cayman Islands where I was born in :)

I recently got certified for open water scuba diving! It is AWESOME! My classes and trainings were all interpreted by an ASL interpreter, who volunteered to help out. This interpreter is already certified, so that is why she volunteered to help out. My instructors are now aware of how to work with the deaf and are willing to hire an interpreter for any other deaf students. I am their first deaf student so it's a good experience for them and me. :thumb: I'm from Wyoming, BTW.
