KMEG 14 - News, Weather, Sports for Sioux City and Siouxland | Deaf School backers: Regents must go

Supporters of the South Dakota School for the Deaf say it's time to end Board of Regents control of the school and turn it over to the state Department of Education.

Parents say the system is broken. And an educator says the Sioux Falls school lets deaf students learn and socialize with peers.

Governor Rounds had proposed closing the school to save the state $2 million next year and forcing the students into mainstream schools. Lawmakers restored the money but said the issue requires further study.

Tad Perry, Board of Regents executive director, says voters would have to amend the state constitution to move control of the school from the regents.

Perry says the regents are experienced in managing institutions -- something that is not a responsibility of the Department of Education.
