IOL: Deaf pupils in Joburg truck accident

Seven pupils of a Johannesburg school for the deaf emerged shocked but unscathed from a minibus on Monday after it was hit by a truck's housing in Melrose, said ER24.

Spokesperson Werner Vermaak said an overhanging branch caught the furniture truck's housing, ripping it from the vehicle and sending it into the St Vincent School for the deaf minibus.

A 26-year-old man sustained multiple arm and facial injuries when he was thrown from the back of the truck in the crash.

He was treated on the scene and taken to the Johannesburg Hospital in a stable condition.

Neither the truck driver nor his other three passengers were hurt.

Vermaak said paramedics assessed seven schoolchildren on the scene.

"Fortunately none of them sustained any injuries. All the children were clearly shocked at what had happened," he said, adding that their families rushed to the scene of the accident.

The driver of the minibus was treated on scene for small cuts, probably caused by the windscreen.
