Deaf professor to tell about 'living in two worlds' » Ventura County Star

On Wednesday at Oxnard College, Kristine Cantrell Hall, an American Sign Language professor, will tell her story of growing up deaf in a deaf family, her struggles to communicate with the outside world and earn an advanced education and her journey to becoming a full-time ASL professor.

"I was born deaf. My parents, sister, brothers, and husband are deaf as well," Hall said via email. "I believe this particular talk is so unique because of my experience and perspective as a deaf individual living in two worlds: the deaf and the hearing. I will share stories that are funny and touching based on my life. My stories will be told in my native language, American Sign Language. It is a language my family and I value very much."

Her talk, "Deaf of the Deaf," is part of The Oxnard College Literature Arts & Lecture Series sponsored by Oxnard College. These free events take place 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesdays in the Clock Tower Auditorium. All events are open to the public and interpreted for the hearing impaired.

A resident of Valencia, Hall is a full-time instructor at Pierce College, specializing in American Sign Language and deaf culture. She also teaches language development of the deaf to deaf adults at the North Valley Occupational Center in Mission Hills. She earned a bachelor's degree in communication arts at Gallaudet University — the only liberal arts university for the deaf — in 1997. She has also given workshops on creative uses of American Sign Language including ASL storytelling, conversational ASL, visual gesture communication, and working with deaf adults with limited language skills.

"I will discuss ... my experience as a deaf person growing up in a deaf family and my role as a mother raising two hearing children," Hall said. "I will talk about my education background, employment, and role as teacher/advocate of the deaf."

The goal of this event is to bring together deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing people to celebrate the accomplishments of people in the deaf community — particularly Hall, said Shelley Savren, faculty coordinator for series sponsored by Oxnard College.

"I think that Kristine will be able to educate the public about the challenges that a deaf person faces when coming from a deaf family and trying to communicate with the outside world," Savren said.
