The rape of a 15-year-old deaf and dumb girl sparked off tension in Ekbalpur this morning. Local people staged a demonstration in front of the police station demanding the accused be arrested. The demonstration was called off after DC (port) Mr Rajib Mishra came to the spot and heard the grievance of the agitating people, said an officer of Ekbalpur police station.
According to police, the accused had allegedly raped the girl in his house on the night of 24 March. Both the accused and the victim live in the same locality. The girl was alone in her room when the incident took place. The victim managed to convey her distress to her parents through gesturing.
Local people, who were informed of the incident by the victim’s parents, raided the house of the accused and intercepted him the next day. The accused was handed over to police. Local people became agitated last night when they came to know that the accused had been released on bail. They staged a demonstration in front of the police station last night.
