Deaf-mute man alleges torture, starves to death - Kolkata - Cities - The Times of India
The body of a 65-year-old deaf-mute man was found in his Belgachia residence on Sunday. He probably died of starvation, said police, who
have detained his brother and a domestic help.
Police have recovered documents, in which Gadadhar complained of torture by his elder brother Prasad, a retired state government employee, and his maid Monica, with whom he shared a fourth-floor room in a government housing estate on Belgachia Road.
On Sunday morning, Prasad called up a local doctor, Manik Banerjee, to attend to Gadadhar, saying he had fallen sick. On reaching the flat, Banerjee found Gadadhar dead. Alleging that he had been murdered, neighbours called police.
After initial probe, investigators from Tallah police station and the homicide section of the detective department ruled out homicide. "We have got some letters, in which he claimed that he was tortured by Monica and Prasad. He probably died of malnutrition," said an investigator.
In his letters, Gadadhar had written that he was often badly beaten up, left to starve and was forced to fetch water from the ground floor. "The duo thrashed him regularly. He often came to us for help," said Nivedita Ghosh, a neighbour.
Gadadhar's sister Jolly Das lodged a complaint, after which Tallah police detained Monica, Prasad and Monica's daughter. "We are waiting for the post-mortem report," said DC (North) Biswarup Ghosh.
