A deaf-mute man admitted Monday he stabbed to death a woman in his Millville apartment four years ago.

Dontay Milbourne, 30, believed the woman was trying to rob him, according to defense attorney Alexander Wazeter.

"He was genuinely sorry for what happened," Wazeter said after the hearing.

Milbourne entered a guilty plea in Superior Court to one count of aggravated manslaughter at a hearing before Judge Benjamin C. Telsey, who is scheduled to sentence the defendant Aug. 13.

A plea bargain recommends a 17-year term in state prison with a provision Milbourne serve at least 85 percent of that time, according to county Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae.

The victim was Jacque "Jackie" Foreman, a 41-year-old Commercial Township resident.

The crime happened April 1, 2006, in an apartment at Maurice River Plaza, a Millville Housing Authority complex at Buck and Vine streets for people who are young and disabled.

Milbourne went to police headquarters, with an interpreter, and reported the death.

In an interview Monday, Wazeter said his client told the court Foreman had a knife.

Wazeter said his client told the judge "he took the knife from her and he stabbed her in the back."

He then stabbed her again after she fell, Milbourne admitted.

Milbourne said he had just met the victim on the way back from a trip to a Wawa store.

Whether Milbourne will get special consideration for where and how he serves his sentence, due to his disabilities, will be addressed at the sentencing hearing, Wazeter said.

Assistant Prosecutor John Jesperson represented the state.
