Charlotte County Major Crimes Unit detectives arrested a deaf/mute man for having sex with a 6-year-old girl Sunday in an Englewood East home.
According to a report from the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, detectives charged 31-year-old Gary L. Shafer of Westfield, PA, with Sexual Battery, and Lewd & Lascivious Molestation.
Detectives report the mother said she observed her boyfriend in a sex act with her daughter in the girl's bedroom shortly after 7 a.m.
A deputy was called to communicate with Shafer in the use of American Sign Language.
Detectives found probable cause and arrested Shafer on two felony charges. He was taken to the Charlotte County Jail and is being held without bond.
