Deaf mum
A profoundly deaf mum today spoke of her terror after a mugger grabbed her from behind and covered her mouth - then used primitive sign language to demand her cash.
The attack happened at 5.30pm on Monday as 47-year-old Rosemary, who is too afraid to give her last name, was walking back to her car in Walker Street car park in Preston after finishing work.
The struggle dislodged her hearing aid and cochlear implant which left her unable to hear throughout the attack.
The 5ft 6in thug, who had a scarf over his face, pulled her Blackberry phone from her pocket.
As she screamed she was deaf, he callously rubbed his fingers together in front of her face to signify he wanted money. She then feared she would be raped as he began patting her clothes.
But as he held defiant Rosemary in a headlock she kicked him between the legs, leaving him clutching his crotch.
Today she said: “I felt his gloved hand over my mouth. My reaction was to dive forward.
“I could not hear a thing as my hearing aids were dislodged. He knew I was deaf because I was screaming “I can’t hear you, get off me” and he made a sign for money. I was screaming obscenities at him. Adrenaline just took over.
“When he started patting my clothes I thought “I’m going to be raped and I’m not having it.
“I was trying to grab his groin and managed to knee him.”
Rosemary’s screams attracted the attention of two passing men.
As they approached, the would-be robber handed the Blackberry back to her before casually walking away.
He wore a grey hoodie, dark jeans and a baseball cap.
Det Sgt John Crichton, of Preston CID, said: “I find this offence particularly worrying. He is an offender who we want to find quickly, because his behaviour beyond this could escalate.”
