Deaf Mom Becomes A Chicken Soup Author — Bolingbrook news, photos and events — TribLocal.com

In January, 2011, I sat down to add a few things to my ever-growing vision list. One of the things I wrote down was "To publish a Chicken Soup for the Soul story."

As time went by, I looked over the list and realized that I was never going to get anywhere near that goal if I didn't start writing something. Right then and there, I went to the Chicken Soup website to see what story submissions they were looking for.

"Story Submissions for 'Find Your Happiness'" jumped out at me. That was right up my alley, as had just experienced an amazing year of happiness after finding my passion for barefoot water skiing once again. So I wrote about that. I shared the story of how a Today Show segment changed my life and put me on the path to happiness. The deadline for the story was coming up quick so I gave the story a once over and hit "send."

Then I promptly forgot about it.

In July, I received an email from Chicken Soup and I nearly deleted it, thinking it was the newsletter that came in every now and then. Life was busy that summer and I was far behind on emails. I was really glad I didn't delete it:

Dear Karen,
Your story “The Best Years of Life Are Still Ahead” has made it to the final selection round for Chicken Soup for the Soul: Find Your Happiness. Only a small percent of the submitted stories have made it this far. The vast majority of stories in this “last round” will appear in the book, but we do not make the final decisions until about a month before the publication date.

I sat there dumbfounded! I was almost in! I didn't care if it wasn't chosen–just knowing that I made it that far was a thrill. A few weeks later, I received a second email stating that the story would be published. I finally celebrated!

When the box of books arrived in October, I sat back and admired the stack. The foreword was written by Deborah Norville, a woman I have long admired. I loved reading story after story about happiness- what a great book to read when you need a lift.

For years, I had read countless Chicken Soup books, and here I was, holding a book that I had contributed to. My heart was content.

And on my vision list, I checked off "Publish a Chicken Soup for the Soul story."

Cool, I remember this Karen from Deafread. She sued a fast food chain over something and she won.......

It was when a fast food restaurant refused to take her order from the drive thru window while in her car.

So people contribute their experiences and writing, and in return they get a box of books they can pass out to friends for Christmas presents. On the flip side, the editors and publishers, who spend very little time and effort in putting together the book makes hundreds of thousands of dollars?

Gee, I'm just waiting for the "Chicken Noodle Soup for the Artistic Hack" edition. Can't wait for that one! :ugh2:
