Deaf man mugged for disability allowance - icWales

A deaf and partially sighted man was mugged after collecting his disability allowance.

George Heard, 58, was punched to the ground and had his money stolen as he walked home from a post office in the Pill area of Newport, South Wales, on Wednesday morning.

To raise the alarm, Mr Heard – who is unable to speak – had to hand his mother’s phone number to a stranger as he lay on the floor dazed after the attack.

Mr Heard was later taken to the city’s Royal Gwent Hospital as a precaution.

Gwent Police have since issued an appeal for information to trace the “two white males” responsible for the assault and theft at about 11.20am, at the turning into Pardoe Thomas Close from the Commercial Road direction.

Mr Heard’s 74-year-old mother, Lillian, told the South Wales Argus: “It’s terrible.

“He just can’t defend himself. I know he’s angry about it.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call Gwent Police on 01633 838111 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
