Deaf man is accused of choke attack - News, Frontpage - Herald.ie

A MAN accused of trying to choke a walker in a park and repeatedly punching her with his fists has been sent forward for trial.

Adiz Bekric (25) is alleged to have attacked the woman from behind and tried to choke her with electrical cable.

Bekric is alleged to have left the young woman, who is in her late 20s, with a broken nose and facial bruises following the assault.

Bekric, who is deaf, is facing trial by judge and jury in the Circuit Court after the DPP ruled the matters were too serious for the District Court.

The accused, who is originally from Bosnia but came to Ireland over a decade ago, appeared before Blanchardstown District Court charged with seriously assaulting a young woman.

He is also accused of producing an electrical flex capable of inflicting serious injury during the assault.

Evidence

The alleged incident took place at Ballymount Park near Tallaght on May 3.

State solicitor Dermot O'Neill said the book of evidence was ready and had been served on Bekric.

He now goes forward to the present sittings of Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

The court heard that Bekric is currently on High Court bail and he was remanded on bail in the same conditions.

Judge John Lindsay gave the defendant the alibi caution, warning him he had 14 days to provide to the State details of anyone he proposed calling as a witness in his defence.

Defence solicitor Treasa Howell and one junior counsel were assigned on free legal aid.

Ms Howell asked the judge to assign two counsel due to the "unique circumstances" of the accused, who speaks through a sign language interpreter.

But Judge Lindsay said he would leave the decision to the Circuit Court judge.
