Deaf man Robert L. Stewart, 36, got shot in a bar
(at Moosup, Conn) during robbery...

PLAINFIELD-- A Moosup man was behind bars Thursday, facing a slew of charges after he allegedly robbed a Moosup bar and shot a hearing-impaired man.

Edmund H. Hernandez, 27, of 39 Parent Hill Road, was apprehended early Thursday at a relative's home by Plainfield and state police. He was taken into custody less than four hours after allegedly using a shotgun to hold up the Sportsman II Cafe on Railroad Avenue.

During the robbery, Robert L. Stewart, 36, who was reportedly playing pool in the bar, was shot. Stewart, who is hearing impaired, reportedly could not understand Hernandez's command to line up with other patrons and employees near the bar.

When Stewart failed to comply, Hernandez allegedly fired one shot, wounding Stewart. Stewart was treated at the scene by members of the Moosup Fire Department and the American Legion Post 91 ambulance corps and then taken to the William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich. He was later transferred to Rhode Island Hospital and was listed in good condition on Thursday.

Police Chief Gary L. Sousa said officers responded to a 911 call at 9:49 p.m. reporting the robbery and shooting and found Stewart injured inside the bar.

Police said the gunman, whose face was covered with an olive-drab colored ski mask, entered the bar carrying a shotgun. He ordered employees and patrons to line up against or behind the bar and demanded the night's cash receipts, fleeing with an undetermined amount of cash.

The money taken in the robbery was recovered, Sousa said.

Marc Williams, who lives next to the bar, called police after a man banged on his door, yelling for help.

"I thought it was the cops the way he was banging," Williams said. "This is not and ordinary day thing -- a guy walking in a bar with a 12-guage."

Williams' neighbor, Phyllis Morel, remains surprised by the shooting.

"It definitely unnerved me," she said. "We usually don't have any problems with the bar."

Theresa Donato, who owns Wacky Packy Store, was not suprised.

"This is Moosup," she said. "There was just a stabbing at the Hangout Cafe so I say 'What else is going to happen.'"

Donato said she knows Stewart from the neighborhood and was surprised he was at the bar.

"He doesn't drink so I don't even know why he was in there," she said.

Sousa said information obtained from witnesses allowed police to quickly pinpoint Hernandez as a suspect.

At about 1:30 a.m., police learned Hernandez was at the home of a relative on Packerville Road, Sousa said. Hernandez was later taken into custody without incident.

He was charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, first-degree assault, first-degree robbery, first-degree larceny, criminal use of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree threatening.

He was held under a $500,000 cash bond and presented later in the day in Danielson Superior Court, where his case was continued to Jan. 28.

This is one of my biggest fears.

That I get in middle of a hold up or caught in a crime taking place and I would not be able to understand the mastermind's instructions.

True Meg, same here likewise, I wouldn't want to caught in middle of anything really....I honestly don't know what I would do if I was and I might get killed first since I wouldn't be able to hear what the bad people are saying you know... ...

I feel bad for this man who was shot during the robbery and he unable to hear..

Yes me two, that one of my biggest fears also, Because being deaf is really diffcult to understand someone who is wearing a ski mask and have no idea what they are saying. I hope I don't be in a place at a wrong time. :sadwave:

I hate to share this kind of news story but
again this is not the first time i've read or
heard similar stories.

There was a beautiful & intelligent
long haired blonde deaf girl Danielle from Sweden
enrolled Gallaudet at age 15 but then few years later
she somehow got shot and killed in a bar
in Stockholm bar during robbery. I was visiting
her parents in Stockholm her Mom showed me
that bar with dancing floor nearby explaning to me that
"any shootings in Sweden is almost unheard of"...
Sigh...

Of course, Danielle actually never heard of the
gunman's warning to everyone in the bar
"do NOT move !!" while she was still moving around...
I think she was still dancing on the floor
during that time. That's so sad.
