Deaf children in Kelston have experienced a unique comedy show as part of New Zealand Sign Language week.

American deaf stand-up comedian John Maucere took the stage at the Kelston Deaf Education Centre this morning.

Mr Maucere is one of the world’s best known deaf entertainers and is touring the country to support New Zealand Sign Language week which ends on Sunday.

He performed at the 2009 NZ International Comedy Festival on Monday night and travels to Hamilton today.

Mr Maucere is accompanied by an interpreter who translates his performance.

Deaf Aotearoa New Zealand chief executive Rachel Noble says the week’s theme for this year is aimed at encouraging people to take responsibility for learning sign language.

"It is also to ensure information and interpreters are available when deaf people need to access employment, education, health and justice services," Ms Noble says.

Free taster sign language classes are be-
ing held at libraries, schools and community centres around Waitakere.

More than 29,000 New Zealanders use the language either full-time or partially in their day-to-day lives.

The 2006 Census showed that New Zealand Sign Language is the 12th most frequently used language of approximately 190 languages in New Zealand.
