DEAF youngsters are gearing up for the premiere of a play they have written and produced.

Scotland's Deaf Youth Theatre group - which features youngsters aged 11-23 - will perform at Glasgow University's Gilmorehill theatre this weekend.

Starting tonight, the show, entitled Gone, centres on a group of children stranded on a desert island in a Big Brother-style reality show.

Artistic director Deborah Andrews was pleased with the input the group had with the show.

She said: "The youngsters were involved in all aspects of production. They designed the set and made or chose all the props too."

Cast member Michelle Fisher, 13, who attends Hamilton College, said: "It's just great, the fact that we don't do it from scripts, we devise it all ourselves."

The performers have varying degrees of communication, with some being able to lip-read and talk while others rely on sign language. Deborah said this didn't pose too large a challenge.

"The aim of the play is to tell the story through movement and the interaction between the characters so both hearing and deaf audiences can follow the plot. We've tried to make it as visual as possible so there's not too much spoken language or sign involved,"

Katriona Fisher plays Drina McToll (a parody of Davina McCall) and was the workshop leader.

"I'm so excited," she said. "I've seen such development in the young people and their confidence. It makes me feel very proud."

Gone is sold out for both its shows.
