The National Foundation for the Deaf says it has been a long time coming, but there is finally a new screening programme in place to check newborns for hearing loss.

The national programme starts in July, and is part of a larger $16-million government plan to address hearing issues in New Zealand.

An additional $8.4 million will be put aside over four years to provide cochlear implants for children with hearing loss.

Foundation Chairmen Professor Peter Thorne says the system is long overdue.
