News - General: Deaf employee succumbs to toxic ammonia

For an hour-and-half, relays of specially trained firefighters fought toxic gas to reach the one employee who didn't make it out of the building.

He was left behind because he was deaf and didn't hear the alarm.

The man was eventually found under a table. He was rushed outside, but paramedics pronounced him dead.

Around 10am on Thursday, emergency personnel responded to an ammonia gas leak at the Vereeniging Meat Packers plant.

Paramedics said 200 people were evacuated.

Five people were injured.

Even better if they had a flashing alarm that he could see.

No worker should have to rely on other people to tell them an alarm is going off.

Some places issue vibrating pagers to deaf occupants that are tied into the building's alarm system.

That's a good idea. Last week in the hospital where I had the doctor's appointment, I was issued a thin piece of plastic about the size of a CD box. They said it would vibrate and flash when my name was called. I remarked that the force was with me and they laughed. But I seriously DID think the force was with me, gee whiz, lol.

That's cool what your hospital did. I guess that's similar to what restaurants use to notify waiting patrons that a table is available.

Yes, the force was with you.

What can a person do if they find themselves in toxic poison? What are the symptoms?

I don't know if South Africa has the equivalent of OSHA and ADA. :dunno:
