Deaf dog defies the odds | Gladstone News | Local News in Gladstone | Gladstone Observer

THEY have taken in the unwanted, the abandoned and the neglected but Friends of RSPCA Gladstone have opened their hearts to a whole new experience.

The group has taken in its first deaf dog in the form of a playful nine-week-old female cattle dog.

Yet to be named, the cattle dog is being cared for by Gladstone woman Vanessa O'Reilly.

Ms O'Reilly claimed the dog from a Raglan property and has vowed to care for the young pup until a loving new home can be found for her.

She said not just any owner would do, with Ms O'Reilly stressing it would have to be someone who is willing to commit to giving the pup the extra attention and time it needs to be trained up.

"She was the only one from a litter of seven that was deaf," Ms O'Reilly said. "She is as deaf as a post. You can clap, whistle, call her ... she doesn't hear a thing."

The puppy is one of about 35 dogs available for adoption from Friends of RSPCA Gladstone.

All are looking to find a new home at the monthly Dog Adoption Day on Sunday which will take place at the group's Adoption Centre from 9am to midday.

Adult dogs cost $225 and puppies are $275. They can be seen at Adopt a pet.
