Deaf Day at the Tennessee Aquarium May 15th | WDEF News 12 | News, Weather and Sports for Chattanooga and the Tennessee Valley

Imagine the stories Nipper and his penguin pals would tell if they could speak to Tennessee Aquarium visitors. The gentoos and macaronis spend as much time studying people as the guests spend watching the penguins at play. These birds are captivating enough, but most visitors enjoy the extra information provided by penguin keepers and docents.

However, there are nearly 30 million Americans who miss out on verbal communications because of they are either hard of hearing or deaf. Twenty-five million people in the United States can hear some sound, but have severe enough hearing loss to be classified as deaf. Nearly three million other Americans are totally deaf.

To help bridge this gap, the Tennessee Aquarium will host “Deaf Day” on Saturday, May 15th from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This special day will feature programs and events designed specifically for the Deaf Community. Sign language specialists will provide help interpreting Animal Encounter programs, keeper talks, dive shows, and behind-the-scenes tours offered throughout both of the Aquarium’s Ocean Journey and River Journey buildings.

Deaf Day at the Aquarium is the result of a partnership between the Tennessee Aquarium and Gate Communications. Members of the Deaf Community and their families will receive the following special discounted rates for Aquarium admission: Adults $20.95 Children 3-12 $12.50 (Under 3 free.)

This year Deaf Day at the Aquarium coincides with the Chattanooga Walk4Hearing beginning on the Chattanooga State Campus at 10:00 am. Walk4Hearing participants will also receive the special Deaf Day discount. Gate Communications is a national not-for-profit organization which serves the Deaf and hard of hearing communities through accessibility services, events and outreaches both locally and across the United States.
