Roberta Smith worked hard to open a local chapter for the California Association of the Deaf. The charter was formed on March 6, 2007.

The San Jacinto Valley Chapter is operated by and for the valley's deaf and hard-of-hearing community. The group advocates for deaf and hard-of-hearing Californians to have the independence necessary to lead productive lives in the community.

To foster further awareness of the group and its issues, Smith is organizing a community event on May 9 at Valley-Wide Regional Park in San Jacinto.

"Building Bridges that Enable Us All" is the theme of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Awareness Day Picnic.

A limited number of vendor spaces and available interpreters will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are required and need to be submitted by March 31 for consideration.

"It is not just dollars that support the community, but God's blessings to touch the hearts of all people," said Smith, chapter president.

She said building communication bridges between the deaf and hearing community is extremely important.

"As a group of people blessed by God, we can do all things," Smith said.

The chapter meets on the first Tuesday of each month for a social event at Pizza Hut, 25795 Stanford St., Hemet.

The meeting on April 7 will also include re-elections for board members.

"When you become a member it means you support deaf rights; becoming a board member means attending the meetings to support our mission statement," Smith said.
