Deaf Choir Prepares For Holiday Season In Duluth | Northland's NewsCenter: News, Weather, Sports | NBC, CBS, MyNetworkTV, and The CW for Duluth MN / Superior WI | Local News

Music is traditionally a huge part of the holiday season.
But on Sunday one church choir in Duluth is letting someone else do the singing for them with a message that's loud and clear.

For this choir...their hands do the singing. The majority of this choir is deaf.

"It's a wonderful group and it feels like family."

Years ago Audrey Bender and her husband Jack came up with the idea of a deaf choir.

"When my wife and I were still going together in Moose Lake and everything, I happened to see her and a few other people signing music and I thought, we got to do this."

Last year the choir was formed.

The choir has been practicing its Christmas Program since September...sometimes hearing the music only in their heads.

"We will actually be doing three songs, my wife Audrey will be doing a solo, "Away in a Manger", the pastor will be singing... "I wonder where I wander..." and then the choir will be doing Silent Night and Jingle Bells."

Some of the members have been signing since they were kids.
Peggy Neugren, the only hearing person in the group, learned to sign just a few months ago.

"It's been a little bit of a challenge but it's been a lot of fun."

Choir members say this year they have a special surprise in their performance but won't give away any hints.

"You have to come to see what's going on."

"We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."

The performance is Sunday December 20th at Pine Hill Lutheran Church in Duluth...the service gets underway at 10AM.
