Deaf Centre Manitoba and DC Cafe workers ready to strike

Employees of the Deaf Centre Manitoba and DC Café Inc. have voted overwhelmingly to strike if necessary to reach a fair contract settlement.

The two groups are represented by the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE). They have served formal notice to the centre and could be on strike on Dec. 1 if no settlement is reached.

The employees have been without a contract for more than six months. Current wages and benefits are substandard, particularly when compared to those of Manitoba Housing Authority employees, who do similar work.

"Despite the committee’s attempts to address these inequities, there has been no attempt on the employer’s part to change their position," MGEU says. "The bargaining committee is returning to the bargaining table to see if the employer is prepared to change its offer, but if that does not happen, members should be prepared to walk the picket line on Dec. 1, 2007."
