A profoundly deaf burglar has been jailed for five years after committing a spate of more than 30 burglaries.
Marc Kaye, 45, was caught by Richmond police when officers recognised his description following a burglary in Kew on Tuesday, June 21, this year.
Kaye was sentenced at Kingston Crown Court on Friday, December 9. He admitted committing the burglary in Kew as well as 32 others.
Arresting officer Detective Constable Gary Smith caught the prolific burglar after recognising a suspect description given by burglary victim Martin Dean.
He said: “Taking into account Kaye’s prolific history of burglary and that within weeks of his release from prison he broke into this house, it was highly likely that he would have gone on to commit many more break-ins if we hadn’t caught him.
“He was a menace to the public and the sentence given to him reflects this.”
Det Con Smith said he was able to make the connection between Kaye and the Kew burglary as the victim’s description, of a 6ft tall bald man who appeared hard of hearing, matched that of a man he had arrested previously in 2008.
Kaye, of Leyton, East London, had forced entry to a house in Kew unaware that the owners were at home.
Mr Dean, who lived in the property, heard noises in the house and went downstairs to see Kaye ransacking a downstairs bedroom.
Kaye escaped through the window, making off with jewellery, but not before Mr Dean realised that the thief had not heard him approach – a key element in catching him.
Kaye was arrested on Friday, June 24, and identified by the burglary victim in an identity parade.
Detective Chief Inspector Martin Ward said: “This is an example of excellent work by a detective whose close attention to his cases has led to a prolific burglar being put in prison. D Con Smith’s attentiveness and quick action means there is one less burglar targeting Richmond.”
