A car hit a 12-year-old boy Friday on Third Street in an area where residents have fought to have a stop sign installed, officials said.

The unidentified boy, who officials say is deaf, was hit just before 5 p.m. between Lakewood Park and Audry Drive. He suffered a broken ankle and leg in addition to head trauma and was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center.

"Some witnesses said the boy ran out into the street," Sgt. Robert Rhoulhac said. "Others said the car was going too fast. It's hard to tell."

Commissioner Derrick Henry, who came to the accident scene, said the street has had traffic problems.

"We've talked about a stop sign for (the Third and Audry) intersection," he said. "The idea of the stop sign is to slow traffic down in this area."

Police did not identify the driver and charges may be pending as police sort out the details.
