Deaf, blind students experience art, music at WGBH - Allston-Brighton, MA - Allston/Brighton TAB

Legendary bluesman Henry Butler, nationally syndicated talk radio host John Hockenberry and VSA Arts of Massachusetts led an “Inclusive by Design” program at WGBH to help deaf and blind guests to experience art and music.

Hockenberry served as emcee, while visual artist Nancy Ostrovsky danced, splattered and drew her vision of Butler’s music onto a large black canvas, bringing the music to life for the deaf attendees. A hearing and a deaf signer expressively snapped their fingers, tapping out the beat on an air piano, conveying the music through American Sign Language and a special audio description interjected between musical numbers, narrating all of the goings-on during the May performance.
