Deaf, blind pupils call for the head of

Pupils at the Bartimea school for the deaf and blind in Thaba Nchu are on strike calling for the head of their principal, Joyce Thothela.

The disgruntled pupils embarked upon an indefinite strike on Tuesday.

“We want the department of education to dismiss the principal as she is not cooperative,” said one of the pupils’ representatives, Mohau Nhlapho.

“She failed to resolve our problems, which date as far back as 2009.”

He said the pupils could no longer stand the exodus of qualified teachers.

“We are being taught by teachers who are not fluent in sign language.

“We have witnessed a large number of teachers leaving the school. We think this situation must be nipped in the bud.”

In addition, Mohau complained about the food served at the school “We are made to eat rotten food since our fridges are not working,” he said.

“There is a sewerage pipe that has busted and nothing is being done about that.”

The provincial spokesperson of the department of education, Howard Ndaba, said there was a problem of poor management at the school. “We have visited the school and I must confess the state of the school leaves more questions than answers.

“They said the building was *dilapidated and they need mattresses. We are going to give them fridges.”
