A DEAF and blind Bromsgrove man has overcome his impairments to gain a national sailing award.

David Burton, 23, has sight and hearing impairments and visits a day service in Smethwich, run by the charity Sense, which provides specialist day opportunities for people with sensory loss.

Through the charity, David attended a six-week sailing course at the Walsall Outdoor Pursuits Centre. He was part of a group of other deaf-blind people, who used the specially adapted facilities at Sneyd’s Lake, at the centre.

The Royal Yachting Association recognised his commitment and ability to sail, and awarded him a bronze national sailing award.

Jon Fearn, activity co-ordinator for Sense said: “Congratulations to David – this is a fantastic achievement.

“He has displayed a real aptitude for sailing and I hope he will continue to enjoy getting out on the lake.”
