Big Spring Herald - Deaf Awareness Week

Howard College and SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf (SWCID) will be kicking off their recognition of Deaf Awareness Week (DAW) with a formal opening ceremony and softball game Sunday at Comanche Trail Park.

The nationally honored recognition week will stretch from Sept. 19-25 and is held to promote deaf culture and draw attention to deaf and hard of hearing persons, their accomplishments and their issues while breaking down myths and misconceptions.

The opening ceremony, including a proclamation from Big Spring Mayor Tommy Duncan, will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Belaski Pavilion, to be followed by a softball game featuring SWCID staff and students vs. members from the Big Spring police and fire departments at Cotton Mize Softball Field. The SWCID Student Government Association will be selling hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks.

As part of other scheduled activities for the week, the SWCID faculty, staff and students will also be volunteer servers at Beans World Café Sept. 20-25 and will be hosting “ASL Story Telling” at the Howard County Library at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29.

The SWCID Audiology Department is also participating in DAW by offering hearing evaluations at the discounted rate of $25 for the general public. The discounts will be honored Sept. 20-25 by calling (432) 264-3705 for an appointment.

SWCID, a community college for deaf and hard of hearing students, was created as part of the Howard County Junior College District in 1979. The campus celebrates the national Deaf Awareness Week each year with various activities on the campus and within the community.
