The 3rd- 6th May 2011 is Deaf Awareness week and to mark the occasion Action for Deafness will have a week of events at their bases in West Sussex.
All week at the Haywards Heath office anyone is welcome to drop in to visit a sign language interpreter and a Speech to Text reporter to see how Deaf and hard of hearing people can gain better access.
Finger spelling guides and other information will be available Action for Deafness staff and volunteers will also be on hand to answer any questions. The week will end with a table top display on Friday the 6th May, West Sussex Fire Service will also be in attendance with their fire engine to talk to people about the fire alarms available to Deaf and hard of hearing people. (Please note the fire-fighters attending will be on call and may have to leave at short notice)
At Action for Deafness Worthing there will be a table top display on all week with members of Shoreham Community Fire Station on hand to demonstrate and talk about the smoke alarms available. On Thursday there will also be a chance for people to meet Gavin who has Ushers syndrome, meaning that as well as being profoundly deaf he also has limited sight. Gavin will be able to show how he communicates with others and speak about how his life has been affected.
The week will also see a number of displays across the county in local libraries and GP surgeries, a full schedule of events can be seen at Action for Deafness :: Welcome to Action for Deafness
