Augustana's Deaf Awareness program will be "In the Spotlight" next weekend as they present their annual Burst of Sign show on April 8-9.
Burst of Sign is a showcase for deaf education students where they present songs and skits completely in sign language.
"This performance is our biggest event and sort of a culmination of all of our hard work throughout the year," senior and president of Deaf Awareness Robin
Bennett said. "Each year, I learn new things and make great bonds with people I didn't know too well before."
The theme for this year's show is "In the Spotlight" and will include a variety of songs from movies like Cars, Shrek, Free Willyand Mulan.
They will also perform a sketch from Finding Nemo and a stomp, as well as telling stories and jokes from the deaf community.
"I love participating in Burst of Sign because it combines two passions of mine: sign language and performing," senior and Deaf Awareness Vice President Andrea Berard said. "It gives the Augie community a glimpse into the signing world."
This year's show includes around 20 people performing, organizing and translating the show. This number is down from previous years, so many of the participants had to take on extra work.
"Everyone has really stepped up and been working very hard," Bennett said. "I am very proud of my group and impressed with those who have taken on so much extra responsibility."
Burst of Sign also provides Deaf Awareness a chance to fundraise for their group as well as raise funds for charity. All ticket proceeds will go to Deaf Awareness while proceeds from an additional raffle will provide money for Children's Inn, a domestic abuse shelter in Sioux Falls.
The prizes for this year's raffle include gift certificates to Scheels, Famous Dave's and local movie theaters. To enter the raffle, audience members may either donate $1 or three non-perishable food items. Last year, Deaf Awareness was able to raise over $400 for Children's Inn.
Performances of Burst of Sign will take place at 7 p.m. on April 8 and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on April 9. Tickets are free to Augustana students and $5 for the general public.
"I really hope students consider coming to the performance and seeing a world they might have never experienced," Berard said. "It is going to be a lot of fun and we have a really great show prepared."
