An upcoming deaf awareness weekend that will educate about the deaf culture is planned for Nov. 12-13.
It will be at the Harvest Community Church in Bloomfield and is free to the public.
According to the Rev. Marshall Lawrence, founder and executive director of Silent Blessings, hearing loss affects one in every four families, and fewer than 5 percent of American churches have an outreach to those who are deaf.
On Nov. 12 at 9 a.m., Lawrence, along with his wife Terry, will challenge churches to start deaf ministries during a deaf ministry workshop.
Lawrence, who is the father of a deaf daughter, has been challenged himself to reach and encourage deaf individuals and their hearing families.
The Rev. Brance Long and his wife Rhonda are deaf and have a full-time ministry in the deaf community. Long has worked to develop Chronological Bible Storying in American Sign Language (ASL).
During the awareness weekend, Rhonda will blend ASL interpretations of contemporary Christian music to create sign art. She has been featured in several videos and has traveled throughout the states ministering in both deaf and hearing churches.
Immediately following Long's deaf ministry workshop, Rhonda will hold a sign art workshop that will teach the ASL interpretation of Christian music. The presentation will appeal to all ages and uses video, music, humor and personal testimony.
Those who attend will learn statistics about the deaf community, explained Anita Edington, coordinator of the event.
“The real goal of doing this is to make people aware of how many deaf people are in the U.S. and unaware of Jesus,” she added.
A popcorn and movie night is also planned for Nov. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Family Life Center in Bloomfield.
The center and Silent Blessings are partnering for the event that will be aimed at children. The movie features “Finger Food Café,” a new comical video done entirely in sign language with a voice-over track featuring Lawrence. Free soft drinks and popcorn will be available during the show.
