Avon and Somerset Constabulary - Deaf Awareness Conference (Forcewide)
Avon and Somerset Police are holding a conference on Tuesday March 16 2010 entitled "Deaf Awareness: One in Seven."
The conference is the latest in a series of events held by the Constabulary that have seen the Police, their key partner agencies and members of the public taking part in work aimed at improving services and understanding the needs of local community groups and the issues that affect them.
Avon and Somerset Police have been developing their internal and external Diversity Strategies in line with the new Equality Standards over the last year and are committed to ensuring that the Force is able to understand the needs and wants of all its diverse communities and deliver them the top-quality service they deserve.
Previous conferences have included: Older People, Mental Health, Honour Based Abuse, and Female Genital Mutilation. Other seminars are planned for the coming months that will look at Faith, Race and Culture.
Organised by the Constabulary's Diversity Unit, the "Deaf Awareness: One in Seven" event aims to increase awareness of how being Deaf/deafened/hard of hearing affects the delivery of policing services and explores how those services can be improved.
Organisers are also seeking to raise awareness of Police Link Officers for Deaf people (PLOD) both internally and externally, and identify opportunities for partnership working to improve services to the Deaf/deafened/hard of hearing communities.
Nadia Saba, Head of Diversity at Avon and Somerset Police said: "We are aiming for this to be a multi-agency event, with partners from the Councils, other emergency services and members of the police community and Deaf/deafened/ people so that the decisions that organisations make are shaped by real-life experiences."
There will be a number of presentations on a range of topics, including Deaf culture, Police Link Officers for Deaf People (PLOD) and the BSL Charter. There will also be three workshops in order to explore key actions for agencies to take forward.
