Deaf and mute jailed for sexually assaulting boys

A DEAF and mute man who preyed on and sexually assaulted young boys in Geylang. and stole bicycles, has been jailed for 10 years.

In passing sentence, district judge Roy Neighbour agreed with the prosecution that Juma’at Tahir had displayed predatory behaviour towards his victims.

“I cannot ignore the public interest to impose a stiff sentence to express society’s revulsion for acts of outraging modesty and anal intercourse on innocent young boys. The long-term psychological harm on these victims cannot be dismissed.”

Neighbour said Juma’at’s borderline intelligence did not preclude him from being found criminally culpable. — The Straits Times / Asia News Network
