About 150 students from Minnesota and Wisconsin attended the second annual Deaf and Hard of Hearing Day at the University of Minnesota last week. The students learned about the University of Minnesota's Disability Services and the Office of Admissions and attended sessions on identity and leadership.
The day began with a reception that featured Goldy Gopher, followed by speeches from Vice President and Vice Provost in Equity Diversity Dr. Rusty Barcelo, and AnnMarie Mickelson, a former Miss Deaf Minnesota who is now a financial analyst. The visitors participated in various information sessions, a student panel and a campus tour.
The participants networked with other deaf and hard of hearing students and learned about college life from current U of M students.
The U of M Office of Disability Services founded the event in 2006 as a means of introducing deaf and hard-of-hearing high school students to the services and opportunities the University offer.
