Deaf and dumb raped, vows to kill self if...

Twenty five-year-old Mrs Idayat Akanbi is deaf and dumb. She accused her husband’s bosom friend of tricking her to a lonely place before raping her. She told IDOWU ADELUSI in this report what she intends to do if the accused is not brought to book for his dastardly act and for causing separation between her and her husband.

MRS Idayat Akanbi, a 25-year-old woman who has speech and hearing defects and who was raped and beaten by one Mufutau, a commercial motorcycle operator, has vowed to kill herself if her assailant is not punished according to the law.

Perhaps, as a last resort, Idayat who felt Mufutau took advantage of her condition to assault her dignity, took her case to the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Oyo State branch which responded appropriately by writing a petition to the Oyo State Police Commissioner demanding immediate arrest of Mufutau as well as investigation and prosecution of the case.

According to Idayat, who spoke with Sunday Tribune through the assistance of an interpreter, the incident happened on Sunday March 27, 2011 between 7pm and 8pm at IDC Primary School, Offa in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State.

According to her, she was happily married to her husband, though the marriage, which was less than a year-old had hit the rocks, no thanks to Mufutau, her husband’s friend whom she accused of causing the marriage breakup.

She alleged that Mufutau told her husband that she (Idayat) was having an extra-marital relationship. He also told Idayat that her husband had another woman somewhere who already had a child for him.
Crisis erupted between Idayat and her husband and she had to pack out.

In February, when Mufutau went to see Idayat at her parents house, he told her that he had initiated a move to broker peace between her and her husband. Idayat saw this as a welcome development and thanked him.

On Sunday March 27, 2011, Idayat, around 6pm went to see a friend, Miss Zaynab Oyewole. When it was 7pm, Idayat left her friend’s place to go back home.

Idayat continued: “Zaynab escorted me to the main road and went back. Shortly after Zaynab went back, Mufutau who was riding Okada, parked beside me. He told me that he was taking me to IDC Primary School to meet my husband who was in the school waiting for me.

“When we got there, I did not see my husband. When I asked why he deceived me, I turned to go, but he rubbed my eyes with Aboniki balm. He drew me back and handled me violently and I fell down.

“I struggled to free myself from him, but he won’t let me go. He got hold of my undies, tore them and forcefully penetrated me. On Monday March 28, 2011, I went to the police station at Iyana Offa to report. Mufutau was arrested and both of us were taken to IDC Primary School. I showed the police where Mufutau raped me and my undies which were stained with blood.

“To my surprise, the police asked Mufutau to bring N6,000 which he produced. The police instructed him to give me N1,000 from the money to treat myself while Mufutau was released. Thereafter, Mufutau boasted that nobody could arrest or prosecute him over what he did to me because I am disabled.”

Angered by what Mufutau did to Idayat, FIDA wrote a petition to the Oyo State Police Commissioner, Mr Saliu Argungu Hashimu last Monday. The petition which was signed by FIDA chairperson, Mrs Dupe Awosemusi was entitled, ”Connivance on a case of rape of Idayat Akanbi: A deaf and dumb woman.”

Some parts of the five-paragraph petition read:

“We write on behalf of Idayat Akanbi, a woman who has speech and hearing defects, (deaf and dumb), who was raped by one Mufutau ‘Ariku’ from Ariku village, Iyana-Offa, in Lagelu Local Government Area, on 27th March, 2011 at about 7 pm.

“It is our brief that the case was reported at the Iyana-Offa Police Station on March 28th, 2011 and one Police Officer named Ebenezer followed Idayat to effect the arrest of the said Mufutau. Surprisingly, however, the said Mufutau was released few minutes later after the policemen at Iyana-Offa had collected the sum of N6,000.00 (Six Thousand Naira) from him. The Police also instructed the said Mufutau to pay off the victim (Idayat) with a sum of One Thousand Naira (N1,000).

“The said Mufutau has since been boasting and threatening to deal with Idayat because of her peculiar disability.

The attitude of the Police Officers at Iyana-Offa has to a great extent confirmed the fears of the people about the Police, who are supposed to protect the citizens and enforce the laws of the land.

“However, we have every confidence in you sir, that you will do everything within your capacity to ensure that the case is investigated and prosecuted to its logical conclusion, so that the victim (Idayat) can get justice and redeem the image of the Police.”

The mother of Idayat, Mrs Mulikat Adekanmbi told Sunday Tribune that she was sad over the incident. “When I confronted Mufutau, he threatened to beat me and my daughter. Even the police that are supposed to bring justice to us over the matter, did not. We decided to leave the matter to God;” she said.

The Baale of Offa, Chief Adeboye Oyelowo said the matter was brought to his notice. “I was also told that the matter was equally reported to the police for appropriate action. As for me, I feel bad about it,” the Baale said.

Efforts to see Mufutau failed because when the reporter went to the village on Tuesday March 19, 2011, he could not be seen.

At the Okada park opposite the gate of Lagelu Local Government Secretariat, Iyana-Offa, one of the operators told Sunday Tribune that Mufutau had just left without carrying any passenger when the reporter got there at 9.10a.m.

Also speaking, Miss Zaynab Oyewole, a friend of Idayat said that the lady actually came to visit her, and at about 7.15p.m, she departed.

Zaynab said she got to know about the development the following day when Idayat told her.

When Sunday Tribune got to the police station at Iyana-Offa, neither the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) nor the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) was available.

However, at the police command headquarters, Eleyele, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olatunji Ajimuda immediately called the Iyana-Offa DPO and demanded for briefing. The DPO who was posted to the division few days before the election told the PPRO that he had not been briefed about the case.
The PPRO assured that the police would commence immediate investigation and prosecution of the case in order to save the image of the police.

By 3p.m on that day (Tuesday March 19, 2011), an elder brother of Idayat called and informed Sunday Tribune that Mufutau was re-arrested and detained at the police station, and that the police also took custody of the undies.

On Wednesday, April 20, Mufutau was arraigned at a Magistrate Court, Erunmu, Ibadan for assault and was granted bail. Reacting, the FIDA Chairperson, Mrs Awosemusi said her association disagreed with the police for substituting rape offence with assault.

She said that FIDA will fight to the last to ensure that Mufutau is prosecuted for the actual offence.
