Liverpool-A woman who was blind and deaf walked in front of a train and died Saturday, investigators said.

Matilda Letham, 54, could not see the flashing lights or hear the warning bells at a crossing gate and walked around it, into the path of a freight train, investigators said.

The accident happened in this Syracuse suburb just before noon saturday. Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh said the CSX train's crew did all they could but were unable to stop in time.

Sheriff's deputies said they dont know why Letham walked onto the tracks.

What do you expect from a blind and deaf woman?

Of course, she can't see the flashing lights or hear the warning bells! She probably was just taking a stroll, and wasn't aware that she was on a train track.

Oh my..what a sad tragedy! of course she could not see or hear the train..but you would think she felt the tracks..surely she knows what tracks are and she would trip over it anyways..come on!..me thinks she might have committed suicide, heh!...

I think she been murder.
Not if there are people around there..apparently there wasnt anybody around
when that happened or they would have saved her...i think she committed suicide in my opinion.

If she have felt the vibratation then she would get out of the way. But still there and I believe it was sucide. If I was in her shoe I surely would have felt the vibrated and move my butt out of the way.

someone should've been with her when that happened...

I just can't tell if it was murder or sucide...but then again, as she is deaf and blind, she should've felt the vibration of the rail road but then again...maybe she didn't step on the metal parts but just on the wooden parts, which wouldn't really let you feel the vibration that much, I think.

There is a railroad track near my son's school and he told that he felt the vibration at the school. So it doesnt matter what she stepped on but if she was near the railroad track and felt it but she didnt move or get out of the way.

I wonder why she did not have an assisant. Strange !!
