I recognized few names on Deaf Lost to AIDS Names List - the fact that it's quite a long list despite the deaf community being very small relative to the hearing is frightening. Remember, they only listed those WHO DIED, a lot more are STILL alive with HIV with potential to infect more people.

I've seen many do reckless sex and contracted HIV as a result. IV drug use is another major factor as well. It's just amazing how they don't realize the dangers they're getting into.

My good friend Gary Wells is on that list. I submitted his name to the list about three years ago. He died in 2004, I think. He was such a good friend and an excellent interpreter especially to the Deaf GLBT community. I still have his article somewhere in my apartment. They did two pages on him when he died. He lived for so many years with AIDS before it claimed him.

For those who wonder why he is on the Deaf list, they said they include CODAS, interpreters, and anyone who was an active member in the Deaf community. He was an interpreter.

Rest in Peace, Gary. You were such a good friend and such a good interpreter!
