Deaf Action Center leader gets surprise | shreveporttimes.com | Shreveport Times

"Happy Birthday to you, Gregory Kallenberg, Happy Birthday to you."

And, what a surprise to Kallenberg when the chorus rang out Nov. 18 at the Betty and Leonard Phillips Deaf Action Center of Louisiana. It was a small, but enthusiastic crowd who included DAC chief David Hylan, staffers development director Greg Hebert and deaf community members Frances Hunter, Doug Sweeney, Irene Sweeney, Miracle Plunkett, Jerry Blunt and Larry Claiborne.

Gregory and wife Heidi were at the center for a morning photo shoot and interview for The Times, preparing to leave for a series of birthday festivities elsewhere.

But as Gregory stepped from an hall into the main room, he was greeted with song and a candle-filled birthday cake from Dough Basket.

What special moment for Gregory for he and wife Heidi are new DAC leaders.

This year, they became DAC board and Las Vegas Night co-chairs.

The glittery Las Vegas Night, by the way, is Dec. 12 at Wine Country, Pierremont Mall.

The couple stepped into roles this year filled for many years by Kallenberg's maternal grandmother, Betty Phillips, who still works vigorously with fundraising. Phillips and her husband, the late Leonard Phillips, founded the center.
