David Letterman Selects Son of Bristol Attorney for Coveted Internship | TriCities

Travis Dougherty, the 25 year-old son of Bristol attorney Erwin Lynn Dougherty, is one of only ten college students to win a coveted internship with CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman. Now a senior at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.—the nation’s premier university for students who are deaf—Dougherty’s application was selected from among hundreds submitted by college students all across the nation.
The semester-long internship, which began this month and continues through May 23rd, will provide Dougherty and fellow interns with plenty of practical experience in what it takes to produce a major television show. Dougherty will find it especially rewarding since he is majoring in communication studies at Gallaudet where, for the past few years, he has logged hundred of hours in the university’s TV studio producing programs that air on the campus’s cable channel and website.

“I will begin working in the research department, checking facts about upcoming guests and various topics discussed by David Letterman and others on the show,“ said Dougherty. After research, he will be assigned to the writing, finance and production departments. “This is a great opportunity for me. I believe I’m the Late Show’s first deaf intern.“

Deaf since birth, Dougherty attended Tennessee High School in Bristol for two years prior to enrolling at Gallaudet, which was founded in 1864 by an Act of Congress and is the only university in the world where all academic and extra-curricular programs are completely accessible to deaf and hard of hearing students.
