The trial for a Sioux Falls woman accused of killing a woman whose dismembered remains were found in a landfill and in a ditch in two separate states is being rescheduled.

Daphne Wright's trial originally was set for May 1 but now has been set to start Sept. 11 while evidence is processed. Court officials said the trial could last a month.

Wright is accused of killing and dismembering Darlene VanderGiesen, 42, in February.

An affidavit says Wright, 42, told police she thought VanderGiesen was trying to break up a relationship with her girlfriend.

The judge is letting the defense hire a DNA expert and a computer expert to go through five different hard drives of computers Wright and VanderGiesen used to e-mail each other before the slaying. Other evidence includes 31 video tapes.

The prosecution has yet to decide whether to seek life in prison without parole or the death penalty for a conviction.

Authorities found parts of VanderGiesen's body in the Sioux Falls landfill and later recovered most of her body majority in a ditch in southwest Minnesota.

Several friends and family, including VanderGiesen's parents and sister, attended a Friday court hearing. Wright entered the courtroom in handcuffs and shackles. The handcuffs were removed in court so Wright, who is deaf, could communicate.

VanderGiesen, who also was deaf, was killed by skull fracture or suffocation, prosecutors have said.

Wright was arrested Feb. 10 after a search of her basement yielded bone fragments, muscle and fat that matched DNA taken from VanderGiesen's toothbrush, according to court papers.

Postings to some Internet sites indicate that deaf people around the country are following the case.
