Danville Community College hosts 'Deaf Fest' | GoDanRiver.com

A dog’s bark. The screech of tires on the road. The popping noise that occurs when someone opens a can of soda.

These are all things people hear almost every day, which is why it becomes so easy to take them for granted.

As a way to recognize people who are hearing impaired, Danville Community College will have a “Deaf Fest” Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

Activities will begin on Sept. 30 at the DCC Student Center at 6 p.m. with a pizza party followed by a movie. The movie will be presented with closed captions; it is being provided by Blue Ridge Deaf Films Society and popcorn is included.

On Saturday events begin at 8 a.m. and last until 5 p.m. There will be exhibits from different organizations like the Virginia Association of the Deaf and the Danville Parks, Recreation and Tourism. There will also be a health fair and crafts.

At 9 a.m. there will be a short welcome speech given by the Virginia Department of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Director Ron Lanier. Other speakers will also discuss issues concerning hearing impaired people.

A cookout at the DCC Student Center at noon will be sponsored by Hamilton Captel, a company which since 1991 has provided telecommunications relay services for people who are deaf, hard of hearing and have a speech disability.

After lunch there will be an AT&T Relay and Jeopardy competition from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

This is the first year the “Deaf Fest” has happened on such a large scale, according to DCC officials. For more information on the festival people can contact Dr. Carl Amos, the DCC Coordinator of Services for the Dear and Hard of Hearing at (434) 797-8479 or email camos@dcc.vccs.edu.
