I have never lived in DC or Maryland so forgive me if I ask dumb question...is it normal for that area to get heavy rain and flooding at this time (summer) of the year??

I know it rains there during the summer time.

No, thats NOT normal at all... I never see anything
like this for many years at that area.

Correct. It was the weird stationary front to the west with the moisture being pumped in from the east that messed up most of the east coast. It wasn't just Wash DC experiencing a mess.

Ditto as the others have said. I cannot remember us getting this much rain at any given time other than when we take a direct hit from a hurricane. Our area measured close to 12 inches of rainfall between Friday and this morning and more was expected. Some areas got even more than that. I do not think that Isabel brought that much rain with it. The difference here is that we do not have the heavy winds associated with a hurricane so almost all of the damage has come from flooding and from some downed trees. Had the winds been greater, there would definately be more trees down and power outages.

I did hear on the news this morning about a dam in Montgomery County maryland that they fear will burst. They evacuated 500 apartment units and 700 homes near the dam and I think more evacuations are on the way.

Over 2,200 Evacuated Near Lake Needwood
than 2,200 people have been evacuated from
areas surrounding Lake Needwood in Rockville.

Officials say the lake is 25 feet above its normal level, and
some water is leaking from its earthen dam.

County officials ordered a mandatory evacuation overnight
Twinbrook, Viers Mill and Aspen Hills areas on the
north side of Rockville. By 5:30 a.m., rescue crews
had evacuated 700 homes and 500 apartment units

Lake Needwood Residents Not Allowed To Return Home !!!

Gaithersburg, Md. (AP) - Those who have evacuated from around Lake Needwood in Montgomery County (website - news) were not allowed back home Wednesday as officials say the situation there remains uncertain.

Hundreds of people have left the area to take shelter at local high schools after a mandatory evacuation was issued in the area of the
Lake Needwood dam.

Montgomery County Chief Administrative Officer Bruce Romer says crews will be working 24 hours a day until "we get to the desired condition."

Officials say the lake is 25 feet above its normal level, and some water is leaking from its earthen dam. They're worried a break in the dam could send water flooding into neighborhoods.

A guy from the National Weather Service was saying today that this type of event happens once every 300 or so years....

I'm hearing lots of scary news from that area. Scary for me, because, I have family and friends that live in Maryland and could be affected by the flooding. My grandmother lives near you, Taylor. Can you tell me how that part of the state if faring? I'm concerned for you guys. PM if you want to know exactly where I'm referring to.

Thanks. And btw, hello! I missed seeing you around. :)

I live in S Fl now, but I used to live near DC and Maryland. I can answer the question as well. It's rainy in the spring time, and Maryland usually sees garden variety thunderstorms in the summer. However, I don't think I've ever seen this happening before. I had moved to FL by the time Hurricane Isabel affected MD, so I missed that.

It's frightening for me to see. I'm used to flooding, but I'm not used to seeing it UP THERE. :ugh2:

Every 300 or so years ? I don't think so, because of the Global Warmin' effects.... that's what people believe. The weather is gettin' weird and weird than before.

Umm... well, Taylor -- in my view, I don't believe that it really has to do with " Global Warmin' " that caused all this. I believe there's somethin' else that caused it.
