Awhile back I was watching "Children of Men". The quote below hit me as something that did affect me at times:

"Y'know that ringing in your ears? That 'eeeeeeeeee'? That's the sound of the ear cells dying, like their swan song. Once it's gone you'll never hear that frequency again. Enjoy it while it lasts. "

So what should I do if this starts to happen? Cause it's a bit tormenting and it'd be nice to lessen the "ringing".

I'm not sure what you mean when you ask what you should do if you begin to experience tinnitis.

Is there anything to mask the ringing?

Thanks for trying

You can attempt to distract yourself with various techniques, but there is really nothing to "mask" it. It is more a situation of learning to live with it and not allow it to interrupt your functioning.

I usually avoid salt like the plague as a general rule (enough sodium in food as it is- at least with the frequency I go out to eat food). Zinc, though, haven't heard of that being used for this purpose. I'll look into it.

The ringing subsided last night and slept a lot better. Sometimes the ringing lasts longer, but this one was really intense.

I understand completely. I have inner ear nerve damage.

I believe there are other threads (older ones) that talk about ear-ringing and tinnitus. Maybe the OP can look those up to get some suggestions. I know for me, when tinnitus starts, music helps to mask it. My bouts of tinnitus last for a couple days at a time but thankfully only every few months. Try some music ...
