CSD cutting 64 call center jobs | argusleader.com | Argus Leader
Communication Services for the Deaf in Sioux Falls has alerted 64 people at one of its call centers that they will lose their jobs in January.
The job cuts are due to a contract that was not renewed with Qwest for customer service call center services that CSD provided for them, said Derric Miller, CSD director of marketing and public relations.
CSD has been operating the contact center at 700 E. 54th St. for several years. The last day of operation will be Jan. 14, Miller said. The contract was for a general customer service call center and was not related to deaf or hard-of-hearing services that CSD also provides.
The job cuts leave the company with about 400 jobs in Sioux Falls and more than 2,000 nationwide.
Though the cuts are unfortunate, Miller said the company recently added employees at its campus on East 10th Street due to a $15 million two-year contract it received to implement a nationwide marketing initiative to increase the use of broadband services among the deaf and hard-of-hearing. The initiative will provide netbooks that are video capable and discounted broadband services to deaf and hard-of-hearing people who qualify for the program. As part of the new contract, CSD hired 60 employees that started job training this week.
“Obviously it’s unfortunate on one side we gained 60 jobs and on the other side we lost 60 jobs,” Miller said.
