(Reuters) - A federal appeals court ruled on Monday that Alabama and Georgia could enforce key aspects of their laws against illegal immigration that allow police to check the status of criminal suspects.

The decisions were in line with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on a similar Arizona law, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit in Atlanta continued to block other parts of the two Southern states' laws, which have been challenged by the federal government and civil rights groups.

Judges said the laws' opponents were likely to prevail in their fight against provisions in both states that would make it a crime in some cases to knowingly harbor or transport an illegal immigrant.

The court also barred Alabama from requiring schools to check the immigration status of children upon enrollment and from requiring all immigrants to carry a registration document at all times.

"We conclude that most of the challenged provisions cannot stand," the court said regarding the Obama administration's case against Alabama.

The rulings follow a split Supreme Court decision in June on Arizona's first-of-its-kind crackdown on people who are in the country illegally in which the court upheld a measure requiring police to check the immigration status of people they stop and suspect are in the country illegally.

But the top U.S. court struck down provisions requiring immigrants to always carry immigration papers, banning illegal immigrants from soliciting work in public places, and allowing police arrests of immigrants without warrants if officers believed they committed crimes that would make them deportable.

Other states that used Arizona's example in crafting immigrations laws have been waiting for rulings of their own in light of that decision.

The mixed opinions from the appeals court on Monday drew praise from both sides of the issue. The House speaker in Alabama said the court had upheld the "real teeth" of that state's law, while critics hailed the injunction against the schools provision.

"The essence of Alabama's immigration law has been upheld by today's ruling," Republican Governor Robert Bentley said in a statement. "The Court is recognizing the state's authority to inquire on immigration status in certain circumstances."

Opponents vowed to keep fighting what have been dubbed the "show me your papers" provisions, which they argue cannot be enforced without racial profiling.

"Alabamian children can now start the new school year without fear that their citizenship will be questioned, and Georgians can continue to give neighbors and friends a ride without first asking for their 'papers,'" said Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center.

Here is my IMO

Because the court has ruled this way, I, an American citizen, don't have to carry any ID with me all the time in public. When the cops want to side my ID, I'll just explain to them that the court said I did not have to. What is ok for an illegal is ok for an American.

incorrect. you are required to identify yourself to police officer upon request. Supreme Court later ruled that simply by telling cops your name is identifiable enough unless cops have reasonable doubt that it did not match up and can detain you. Let's stick with facts instead of "IMO".

What is ok for an illegal is ok for an American.
incorrect. it is illegal for cops to assume or treat you as illegal immigrant in the first place. that's why cops can only ask for papers AFTER they have been arrested for other crimes.

you as American citizen should have know this better.....

You will going to be in jail, no doubt.

As an American citizen, I know of many instances where a cop can ask an American for ID without an arrest. As an example, I report my neighbor for "loud noise", the cops can ask for ID from them, without an arrest. But if I report loitering in the parking lot of Home Depot/Lowe's, the cops won't be allow to ask for papers/ID, only tell them to "move on." If I report a suspicious person sitting on a motorcycle in front of my house, the cops can ask for an ID without an arrest. If I report a family of illegals sending their kid to public school, the cops can't ask for papers/ID, not can the school....by order of the COURT.

There are some people, especially full-time pedestrians don't carry any ID, they only have limited original document like birth certificate and SSN, if police find them don't have ID so they will ask question to identify by call statewide or nationwide database to confirm if it is positive or negative, if claim is negative so police could arrest for lying or false information.

Home Depot and Lowe's are private property and it is up for them to deal with loitering, it is their manager's responsible to call police if loitering becomes problematic. I had seen some people overslept on Walmart parking during night when I worked and my boss decided to allow because they weren't big problem, even local police can't disturb without permission from Walmart.

Are you making any accusation about undocumented families? That's extremely wrongful for you to make accusation. It is not your responsible so let immigration enforcement (ICE) or police deal with undocumented immigrants. I never make any accusation against people, regardless on immigration status, also racial profiling is problematic because if you see people with brown skinned so you automatically assumed they may be undocumented immigrant.

They way rolling phrased it, the immigration status would not be in question. He said report illegals.....not report suspected illegals.

If you live to be 65 years old, you will have my life experience. And I do hope that happens. However, you have to live AMONG a group to know the group. An example is the culturally Deaf, to know them and to recognize them you have to live among them. Fortunately/Unfortunately I have lived among the illegals everyday here in Houston. (remember Houston is a sanctuary city)

Why are you saying that we need to be 65 years old to experience with those situation?

I lived in LA, Chicago and DC so they are hotbed of undocumented immigrants and have high percent of latino population. There are many documented immigrants and undocumented immigrants so it is impossible for you to weed it out, without ask them for document or personal question. There are much more undocumented immigrants in LA than in Houston, and I don't have any issue with them because they don't bother me. I'm more concerned about jobs go oversea than undocumented immigrants. The latino population already outnumber blacks in state of IL, especially in Chicagoland and will be not very longer time in DC metro.

I told you to not underestimate me because I already into middle of undocumented immigrants, especially in my old high school.

You live in New Jersey and you have a lot of undocumented immigrants so you already experience now.

Are there Mexicans I hate? Of course.
Are there Mexicans I socialize with and am friends with? Of course.

Are there blacks I hate? Of course.

Are there gays I hate? Of course.

At least I'm not a bully.

this is related to this thread.... how?

How would you and rolling know if they are undocumented immigrant?

This was his scenario. :dunno: I suppose there are lots of ways one might know. Perhaps the person confided in them.

and how exactly would rolling know that?

:dunno: Maybe (since this is a hypothetical) the HOA did a background check and Rolling was on the board. Maybe he applied to work for rolling....

Clearly.... it's a case of racial profiling based on stereotype and skin color such as "if you see a group of Mexican guys waiting at a certain corner, they must be illegal immigrants."

The post you asked me about was BEFORE this post. I am answering about that. Not what you are quoting now.
