Father of Dayton toddler believes relatives are lying about her death | khou.com Houston

DAYTON, Texas – The death of an 18-month-old girl is tearing apart a Liberty County family.

Jack Clynton Hollis, 18, is charged with injury to a child in the death of his niece, Harlee Ann Renee Dowdy.

Authorities say Hollis admitted he "dropped the baby" in court Thursday morning. The toddler’s grandparents say she wasn’t breathing when they got home. Harlee later died at the hospital.

A Liberty County Justice of the Peace said Hollis, a mentally disabled teen, appeared to be scared and he doesn’t seem to understand that his niece is dead.

Harlee’s dad said Hollis should have never been left alone with Harlee and her 3-year-old sister.

"I do hope that nothing bad… that she didn’t suffer, that she went in peace with the Lord," Chris Dowdy said.

He had just made arrangements for his little girl

"She was fun. She was loving. She loved to dance. She loved to shake her bottom," Dowdy said.

Dowdy said his father and stepmother were supposed to be babysitting the children. Authorities say the couple, both volunteer firefighters, left home to answer a fire call.

Dowdy can’t shake the feeling that some members of his own family are lying about what happened Tuesday when his dad and stepmom apparently left Hollis alone with the little girls.

"Don’t lie about it. The truth will set you free," Dowdy said.

His fiancée, Amber Jeane, is also angry.

"They gave us three different stories and we don’t even know, you know?" Jeane said. "That’s horrible. How can you do that? How can you be that bad of a person? How can you?? I just don’t get it."

The grandparents aren’t commenting.

"Some story is not being told. Somebody is lying and you should feel very guilty," Jeane said. "You lying on behalf of this baby’s death, on her life and y’all need to come clean."

Hollis is being held on a $100,000 bond. The charges against him could be upgraded.

Harlee’s funeral will take place Saturday at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. A fund has been established for the child.
