HARINGEY Council's executive member for children and young people, Councillor George Meehan, has poured cold water over recent suggestions that specialist school, Blanche Nevile, is to be closed.

The future of the school for deaf children, in Burlington Road, Muswell Hill, has been the source of constant speculation since a letter from council officers suggested it might be closed and the pupils introduced to mainstream education.

Parents and teachers were up in arms about the prospect but Councillor Meehan has denied the claims.

He said: "In response to all recent articles and letters concerning Blanche Nevile School, we would like to stress that Haringey Council are not closing Blanche Nevile School, nor are we planning any cuts in the provision and education for children and young people with hearing impairments.

"What we are determined to do is provide the highest quality education for deaf children in the borough. This means building on the best practice which exists now.

"Over the past year, officers have been working with staff and governors from Blanche Nevile, Fortismere and Highgate Primary on how to best do this. At no point was the removal of provision ever considered. Options for governance were, but never developed into a proposal."

Councillor Meehan also stressed Haringey was not deliberately trying to run numbers down at the school.

He added: "Our officers will continue to work together with Blanche Nevile to provide a successful and stimulating school environment for children and young people with hearing impairments."

A 267-name petition was presented to council officers at a public meeting earlier this month
