Montana's News Station - Fair. Accurate. To the Point. -Council to advise on Idaho deaf, blind school

The state Board of Education plans to appoint an advisory council to help decide the future of the Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind in Gooding.

The future of the school became uncertain in 2006 when lawmakers suggested the state could better serve students by expanding outreach programs, not boarding kids at an expensive campus in rural Idaho.

The board is contemplating several options, which include moving the deaf and blind school to a bigger city.

Board members decided this month to create an advisory council to make recommendations on the future of blind and deaf education in Idaho, including what should happen to the school.

Board spokesman Mark Browning says the advisory council will include 20 members and they haven't been appointed yet.

The council is expected to make recommendations to the board next year.
