This was no ordinary field trip.
Yes, there were students, teachers and pizza. But their destination was the Coral Gables office of dentist Jose Abadin. Ten students waited their turn, not for rides, but to have their teeth checked.
For four years, Abadin and his staff have donated a day to free exams for deaf students from Auburndale Elementary School, 3255 SW Sixth St., Miami.
The students come from families that cannot afford quality dental care, said Abadin, who learned of the need from an Auburndale teacher who is one of his patients.
Teachers from the school translated for the students and dental staff. But by now, Abadin said, they have picked up a few words of American Sign Language on their own.
After all the exams, cleanings and X-rays were done, Abadin said he had his staff knew they were making a difference.
This year, for the first time, not a single student needed to have a decaying tooth pulled.
''To see the smiles and how appreciative they are makes you feel good inside,'' Abadin said. ``It's totally worthwhile.''
