Donald Otwell
For 42 years Don Otwell has been ministering to the state’s deaf community. He has ventured down many avenues to aid the deaf, from being a summer missionary to serving on boards. For the past 36 years he has worked with the Convention.

Otwell joined the convention staff in 1970 as a joint appointment by the Home Mission Board (SBC), now the North American Mission Board, and the Convention as a missionary in the Language Missions Department. In 1979, he was promoted to associate in the department. Otwell became a state consultant to Deaf Ministries in the Language Missions Division in 1997 and served there until his recent retirement.

In his role as a consultant, Otwell assisted local churches and associations in ministry and outreach among the deaf. He trained interpreters, coordinated programs and assisted in evangelistic outreach. In addition to his work as a consultant, Otwell was the editor/writer of The Florida Baptist Deaf Newsletter from 1996 to the present. It is a bi-annual publication of the Convention and Florida Baptist Conference of the Deaf for the deaf and workers with the deaf.

“Otwell is loved and respected by the deaf community in Florida,” explained Raul Vazquez, former director of the language division. “He is one of the most humble, spiritual men I have ever met. It will be difficult to fill the place that he leaves vacant in our Convention.”
